Erik and Martin Demaine

Erik and Martin Demaine are brothers who focus on the science behind crease patterns. they try and recreate complex mathematical shapes using only 1 sheet paper.

I tried to re create a hyperbolic paraboloid, based on a crease pattern by Erik Demaine. These are some photographs of my own attempt.

Hyperbolic Paraboloid - A mathematical shape with the parametric equation z=x²−y².
When this equation is put into Autograph (a graph drawing package) it creates this shape, you can see is very similar to the sculpture I created.

I also experimented with this technique using different shapes, such as a Hexagon instead of a square, this is the result.
